We understand that many homeowners might shy away from having anything to do with fixing or repairing your central heating system out of fear of making any problems worse! However, what most people don’t know is that there are a few simple checks that you can undertake to maintain the healthy condition of your central heating system! We have outlined some of the key steps that you can take to guide you through keeping your central heating system running smoothly...

Bleed your Radiators!

The most common tip that you may already know of in order to keep your central heating system running smoothly is to bleed your radiators. If you are unsure of how to do this, then a quick Youtube video or Google search will explain it perfectly! Not only does bleeding radiators help get rid of cold spots in your radiators, but it will also improve the circulation of your entire central heating system! Cold spots often form inside radiators due to trapped air and bleeding your radiators releases this air, meaning that they should be back to working order once you have finished bleeding them.

Regular Boiler Checks

It is of paramount importance that you regularly check the pressure of your boiler. When your boiler is functioning at its maximum potential, the pressure will likely be between 1 and 1.5 bar, but any lower, then the tank needs to be topped up. If you notice that the pressure level is below 1, and you would like one of our experienced Gas Safe registered engineers to come and resolve this problem, then you can give us a call on 01353 362034 / 07455 158585 ( for our Ely-based engineer) or 01763662508 / 07834774530 (for our Buntingford-based engineer).  We also advise that you get your boiler serviced at least once a year in order to keep your central heating system running smoothly and to avoid paying any maintenance or repair costs  throughout the year.

Pipe Lagging

As the winter months are approaching, it is essential that you lag your pipes in order to protect them from freezing. Frozen pipes are likely to limit the circulation of water throughout the central heating system and could even result in pipes bursting!

So, what does ‘pipe lagging’ actually mean, and how do you do it? We are aware that you may not be familiar with the term ‘pipe lagging’, but all this means is to insulate your pipes throughout your central heating system. Pipe lagging can be easily bought online, or at any local DIY shops for a few pounds! We think that pipe lagging is an investment worth looking into as it will provide you with protection from freezing pipes all year round!

Keep an eye on your pilot light

It is important that your pilot light should always be burning a very bright blue, as this indicates everything is running smoothly. If by any chance it is showing up as yellow or orange, then this means that there is a problem with your gas supply. We advise that you get in touch with our team immediately and we will have this issue fixed as soon as we can.
